50th Birthday Party Ideas

Age is strictly a case of mind over matter. If you don't mind, it doesn't matter. -- Jack Benny

Planning to throw a surprise birthday party for someone just turning 50? I had a 50s theme for my mom's birthday. I encouraged guests to come dressed in 50s style. There was a fashion show as well. Mom was glowing with joy while serenading down the aisle dressed in her 50s outfits. It turned out to be beautiful journey into the past for her and all her friends. The decor consisted of bright colors and polka dots. Old melodies kept everyone busy on the dance floor. Mom simply adored it.

To make your loved one's 50th birthday party equally special, here are a few interesting party ideas:

  • The party theme can be 'bidding youth goodbye'. The decor must include black and white, mock tombstones can be placed, with ‘adieus to the bygone days’ inscribed on them. Don't forget to burst crackers and balloons in the end welcoming the new era of happiness.

  • Memory Lane party
Collect photographs and small keepsakes of all the friends, well wishers and relatives and place them all over the house. Get that old car of his painted all over again with all the modifications done and go on a ride together. You can even invite his old friends belonging to his school days or college days and organize a poker night.

  • While sending out invitations, ask your guests to fill in this questionnaire:

  1. My favorite thing about Sam (use guest of honors name) is ______.

  2. He is best at _______.

  3. The happiest I ever saw him was when he________.

  4. The dumbest thing I ever saw him do was________.

  5. My most memorable moment with him was ________.

You may want to have them put these answers on video, have a slide show or have the party guests read these stories out loud.

  • Have an ice cream party for the baby boomers. Ask everyone to bring their favorite topping & ideas to build sundaes, banana splits, etc. Surprise the birthday boy/girl with the biggest, craziest, very creative, bowl of ice cream. Those watching their sugar & fat intake can bring peanuts & fruit, yogurt etc.

  • If there is a favorite restaurant he/she likes to visit, try reserving all or part of it for the birthday. Check with the management and see what they’ll allow you to do to make the night special- bring in a live band, put up decorations, make speeches, run a picture slide show of memories and years gone by.

  • Plan a trip to the Bahamas. Destination parties are very popular right now, and travel companies compete to find the best, cheapest, and most exciting destination package for vacationing groups. They might even be able to charter you a fishing boat, arrange for your favorite song to be played by a live orchestra at the birthday dinner, deliver a convoy of rented motorcycles to your hotel door. Phew!

  • Wish fulfillment- Think of an activity your Mom has always dreamt of doing and offer to do it with her. If she’s always wanted to learn to paint or sing or dance, sign up for a class with her.
