If you give gifts that are hand made even if you didn't make it yourself, the gift giving is more personal and special.
Besides the fact that if you go to the trouble of "seeking out a unique gift" it isn't something that everyone else in the country has.

"Walmart gifts" the whole country shops at these types of stores, so not only your gifts are the same as the entire country's so are all of your decorations.
If you put forth some thought and concern into your friends and family and seek out their personality and likes, then they have a gift that maybe a handful of people have. Which inturn makes it more special.
