Patriotic Party Ideas...!

I love the 4th of July! Not only does it remind me that I truly am proud to be an American, it is a great time to be with family, have a picnic or barbeque, watch beautiful fireworks light up the sky, the list could go on and on! I came upon a great list of ideas that might help your party the party to be at this weekend! Thanks to Studio 5 for letting me use this... and if you have ideas or traditions that you love, let us know! Leave a comment and let us know what fun things you have done...

Studio 5 Party, Holiday and Idea Contributor Alisa Bangerter shows how to make it a fun, festive atmosphere.
Invitation Ideas:
• Simple invitations could be printed and attached to small flags. If these need to be mailed, simply roll the flag and mail in mailing tubes.
• A creative invitation would be to fill a balloon with red, white and blue confetti or paper shred and a rolled up invite. Fill the balloon with helium and tie on a ribbon. Attach a small tag that states the recipient must pop the balloon to find the invite. Balloons filled with confetti would also make fun centerpieces the kids could pop at the end of the party or take home as favors.
• Attach a printed invitation to a box of sparklers. Ask the recipient to bring them to the party and at dusk everyone can do fireworks.
• Create a "formal" invitation written in the same language was the Declaration of Independence as an invitation to your barbecue. Print on parchment paper, roll it up and tie it with a ribbon. You could even fold it and use a wax seal on the envelope.
• Attach an invitation to a patriotic photo.
• Be really creative and have someone dress like Uncle Sam, Betsy Ross or the Statue of Liberty and deliver the invitations personally.
• Ask guests to come dressed in red, white and blue.
Table Setting and Décor Ideas:
• Cover tables with white paper and sprinkle red and blue crayons on the table for guests to use. • Tables covered with newspaper and stamped with red and blue stars using acrylic paint can look nice and save on the budget. Newspaper can also be used as sandwich wraps.
• Print the Declaration of Independence on paper and use as placemats or napkin wraps.
• A quick centerpiece would be to fill red or blue sand pails with sand and insert small flags or stars on wire.
• Sprinkle red, white and blue wrapped candy down the center of tables. Another option would be to fill different sized jars and containers with candy and place on tables for easy snacking.
• Hang flags around everywhere or line walkways with them. Place some string or strong fishing line across the area of the barbecue and hang small flags and/or stars from the line. (You could also hang festive paper napkins, fabric triangles, curled ribbons, etc.) This will create a low ceiling effect and add to the atmosphere. Tiny lights and paper lanterns also would add if at dusk.
• Play patriotic music in the background.
• Print coloring pages (patriotic images) for children to color. Place them on the tables. It might be fun to create and print 11x17 (or similar size paper) placemats with patriotic puzzles, trivia, images to color, facts, etc. This is similar to what kids would get in a restaurant.
• Wrap silverware with napkins and a band with a patriotic trivia question or fact on it.
• Have patriotic stickers for kids (and adults!) to decorate their drinking cups with.
• Use inexpensive kitchen towels as napkins. These wash up great and are nice when having messy food such as ribs, sloppy joes, etc.
Creative Food Ideas:
• Place large bowls of popcorn in the center of tables for everyone to snack on while the food is grilling.
• Use flag picks in food such as burgers and sandwiches.
• Serve bottled drinks in an ice filled red wagon. Stick some flags in the ice for a festive touch. An ice filled child size swimming pool is also a great way to serve drinks for a large crowd.
• Wrap bottled drinks and water with customized bottle wraps. If they will be in ice, cover the wrap with clear packing tape.
• Use red apples with blue or white ribbons tied to stems as centerpieces. Place them in baskets, bowls or tiered display pieces to create a fun and tasty edible display.
• Be creative when grilling food. Use circle skewers for kabobs, cut stars out of cheese to melt on burgers, etc.
• Set up an ice cream bar with a variety of red, white and blue toppings and ice creams.
• Serve red, white and blue chips. Terra Chips makes some exotic vegetable chips called: Stripes & Blues. They are made from red sweet potatoes, blue potatoes and candy striped beets. They are found in local grocery stores and are very fun!
• Float a few raspberries, blackberries, strawberries and/or blueberries in a drink jar.
• Set up a cupcake decorating station where everyone can decorate a cupcake or two for desert. Have several icings to choose from and lots of red, white and blue candies and sprinkles for toppings.
• Serve homemade ice cream. You could have a homemade ice cream making contest.
• Ask guests to bring a homemade pie and have a contest. Give a prize to all and then serve the pies for dessert.
• Make star watermelon pops. Simply cut slices of melon and then cut into star shapes using a cookie cutter. Insert a wooden Popsicle stick in the side and freeze.
• Make s'mores over a fire pit using red, white and blue star marshmallows available at grocery stores.
• Serve patriotic floats by scooping vanilla ice cream in red or blue soda. Use three straws in each…red, white and blue!
• Serve red white and blue fruit on skewers. These would also be fun used as drink stirrers.
• A creative way to make a flag using fruit is to alternate strawberries and banana slices on skewers and lay them on a platter side by side to make flag stripes. Thread blueberries on the top of several of the skewers to create the blue portion of the flag when the skewers are set on the platter.
• Take the time to place chips in bowls and buns on platters. Something simple like this can add to the presentation of the food.
• Press the sides of purchased ice cream sandwiches in red, white and blue sprinkles for an easy and quick treat.
• Serve foods in single serving cups such as cut up fruit, salads, etc. This can add a fun dimension to serving the food and even can help control portions.
• Use ice cream cones as serving containers for fruit, salad or candy.
• Use name cards or food picks to identify foods served. Use creative names such as star spangled sloppy joes, patriotic potato salad, liberty lemonade, firecracker chicken, etc.
• Remember to use food coloring in cakes, salads, breads, etc. to create fun red, white and blue looks.
Simple Activity Ideas:
• A fun activity would to give each family (or group of 5-6) a sack with some random items in it. Give the groups 15 minutes to come up with a skit using the items. Have the skits be patriotic in theme and maybe give a specific word or line each must say somewhere in their skits. Have some items in the bags that are red, white and blue or patriotic in nature. These skits are often hilarious and a ton of fun!
• Make cards for someone in the military. It might be nice to have a veteran come and give a little presentation about his/her service for our country.
• Have a karaoke time and make sure to include some patriotic songs.
• Make up a patriotic trivia quiz and give a prize who can answer the most.
• Have readers take turn reading the Declaration of Independence. Have the readers dress the part.
• Hide paper stars or tiny flags all throughout the yard. Have the kids find them and give prizes. • Hold a sidewalk chalk mural contest for the kids. Tell them to draw something patriotic and give prizes.
• Play a game patterned after "Who Wants to be a Millionaire". Create patriotic or American history type questions. This is a lot of fun and can be educational.
• Have a photo station for families or individuals with lots of fun patriotic props.
• A favor packet, bag or basket could be sent home with each family or individual. Place simple items inside such as wrapped patriotic cookies or star shaped rice krispie treats, simple fireworks, handmade patriotic games or puzzles, a copy of the Declaration of Independence, red, white and blue popcorn or other items, etc. Make these simple and inexpensive but a fun surprise for your guests to have. . You could also make grab bags for each child filled with simple activity items, candy etc. and give these at the first of the barbecue.

Next time

Sorry. Too busy at the moment.
Can't blog up another post as I said I would!!
Tomorrow aite? =)
I know what I'm gona post about xD
Ta-ta!

Random Events

Restaurant City is working and its fascinating O.o
haha!! It's kinda boring...cause ALL you have to do it to hire some of your friends to work for ya
and they will obey xD it's all your choice
in the other way..its rather amusing to watch your very own restaurant function by itself =)
sometime it's kinda retarded though =='
*oh well*

Lets see, was really mad earlier in the morning
ahaha, not surprising
I was rather cranky since last night actually
=/
Nevermind about that

During Biology, in the lab
Was talking, and arguing with Lawrence when Rishi came and called me out
Went out, saw Tashy and Brandon out there too
Have to list down some people's name for the netball competition la
*and it is like, frigging next week?!*
*bloody crap*
and we don't even know how to play =='

1. Sue Yi (the damn blur Leader, wth)
2. Natasya Chiu (Tasha, hearts her! xD)
3. Nayli (Pro mia orang)
4. Ling Ling (the
loud lil cute sis)
5. Sharmilaah (loud, caring lil sis)
6. Manisha (extremely loud xD bossy lil sis)
7. Phooranasha (warden)
8. Syahirah (is she still a warden?)
9. Melissa Chiu (Tasha lil sista)
10. Jesselyn Yeoh (Jon lil sista)

Anyways, whatever la
I don't really give a damn whether we lose or win
teachers say so too =D
ahahaha....

okay, moving on =)

I had my oral with Cik Furziah right at the time the school bell rangs
I stayed back though, so I didn't really mind
Went to Pejabat, and met Tasha on the way *thank God!*
was supposed to meet up with her at the canteen right after school
Anyways...I love my oral xD I mean, my speech x)
*perasan-ness*
I talk about everything I had on my mind lately *Cik Furziah ish so supportive!*
and I felt proud of myself, mostly about my choices
I.Felt.So.Happy!!

okay, okay.
That's a lie.
I still feel a little sad whenever I talk about it
But you know something? I have no regrets at all
Why the hell would I BE?

Neeways, after my English oral
went to change with Tasha before we went makan-makan
and joined Ling, Milah, Manisha at the Mandarin's there
didn't noticed Tashy and Rishi was there too till Tasha ask where are they and Ling point out
ahaha
*tom yam rocks!*
its spicy, its hot, and it makes my lips goes RED *mwah mwah*
haha, sorry, a lil bit off right now xD
Tasha loves the Tom Yam too =)
Manisha and Milah had been eating that too since I intro them the TomYam over there
xD TomYam TomYam TomYam!!
the sad thing, there are some stupid hawker sellers that make Tom Yam tasted to horrible =='
SCREW THEM =D

Walk back to school, holding Manisha's 100+ the whole time *cause she malas*
and went to Pondok with Tasha
Ling, Manisha and Milah didn't went there though
and I was still holding Manisha's 100+

Lets see
I threw Rishi's right shoe up to the roof thingy to make him shut up
*yeah well, Rishi and Tashy was there already =)*
We played Truth or Dare
its fun alright...I guess xD
Rishi used the 100+ bottle to be the spinner
He kena like banyak kali
Choose all Dares, few of the dares are rather boring come to think of it. The most interesting is the one where Tashy dare him to spin around a tree(?) saying "I love Henaaaa"
and yesh, he look retarded doing that xD
Tasha also kena like lotsa time
All Dares as well, one is to spin around, looking up in the air like she's in love all xD
Rishi's idea.

and the other one I remember, is to squat down and hold her ears. Rishi's idea =='
and to quack "I'm a lil dirty duck, quack quack". That's Tashy's idea. Don't remember the exact words too well though.
AHAHAHA
I kena twice, I choose Dares
1st, is to cooed over Tasha's hair, and act like I'm in love with her hair. Lol much? Rishi's idea.
2nd, is to kissed Tasha's nose ==' I Didn't Do That Kay! swt, another Bean's stupid idea.
Tashy damn lucky fella!
Kena once nee, Rishi dare him to say dno what to whatshername
and when he kena the second time, he was like
"Eyh, lets go ad la"
Blehh...he was scared he'll kena teruk from us xD

Netball practise. WTH?
Went back early too =(
Awwww shucks *I hate going back early!!*

Just remember something xD
Shalya and Joyce started it
They accidentally spill some of "The Secret Weapon" on the floor and Presto!! =D
We found out the way to make the Floor DAMN SLIPPERY
=) I knew what was it, so we kinda kept quiet about it

Any idea how hilarious is to watch people walking by and they slip?
Not fell though. And they were all like "WAO~!! WTF?"
xD
and they will be like looking at the floor all, and asked us
Joyce will be like pointing up to the ceiling
which leads everyone thinking there's some oil dripping around *lmao wth*
I really had a hard time trying to keep my face straight from laughing or grinning

Now,
Joyce, Shalya, Me, Lawrence, Michelle, Hean Tee, Sin Beng, Saik Ann knows
We gang up and make the whole path way slippery xD
I had to laugh out loud else I'll probably be having hard time breathing
my stomach aches from laughing too much =='
Tomorrow will be another day....=)

P.S This post is rather loong isn't it x)

P.P.S Will post up another post REAL SOON, like now? xD

and Adrian as my Chef
AHAHAHA

Work for meeee!! xD
*no offence? =)*

Okay, back to the topic
Canteen Day!!
Supposedly to be a very fun day ya kno
Where everyone will be shouting and telling and laughing alot
Chaos I assume
Sadly, our school never invite anyone from other school
scratch that
we are not even allowed to do so
it's only between our school and us students and teachers =='
HOW LAME IS THAT
*shrugs*

My stall sells Nasi Ayam, Nasi Tomato, and Nasi Kandar
Business was quite good I supposed
Was out of rice like after a while
Was in charge of Chicken Rice
ahaha...swt
Manisha helped me
Kiki and Atiqah for Nasi Tomato
and Tashy, Chet, Bean and Brandon for the Nasi Kandar
haha! Bean and Brandon did not do as much as Tashy and Chet did though
Tashy joked that if Chet failed his SPM,
he would be a nasi kandar seller ad, confirmed!
HAHA!! Looks like it xD
Had fun actually
Ling wandering around, don't know doing what
Mp3 busy being a DJ
Mila at KL =( miss her!
Tasha selling at her stall too!!
Didn't really get to talk to her till the end of the Canteen Day
haha!!

Had some downs too
Like when I learned something from someone about Me
*sighs*
Things are not what they seems..when would they only see that..?
*cries*

Was fed up by the end of Canteen Day actually..
Long story lol
Some people la
Peli Peli

So I walk away with a book under my arm =)
lol much?

And later on
Was really tired!! =(
Can't wait for school though..
especially stay backs!!

P.S Being myself is so scary

P.P.S How do you let them know that you miss them when you're not wanted?

Learning to See by Traveling with a Teddy Bear By Brook Noel

"We come to love not by finding a perfect person, but by learning to see an imperfect person perfectly"
Sam Keen

This week, I had the pleasure of going to Knoxville to film two segments with the NBC station. One segment included my daughter. We had one long 9-hour-day of travel, then a day of filming, and then a day of travel to return home. She held up like a trooper, constantly assisting me in every way she could.

Of course, as all travel with children includes, there was a challenge or two. First, her last molar decided to come loose. In one hand I held my notes and in the other I held a tube of Orajel. It was always at the most opportune times that the pain would come--while juggling four bags through security, five seconds prior to going live on television--you mothers know how this works. (And for the non-moms reading - the moral and message of this column applies to you so keep reading!)

The last challenge of the trip came the day we left. We had purchased a teddy bear on the way down and Sammy deemed it the most special bear she had ever had. Every night she tucked it in, complete with back rub. She searched a name database on the internet and the bear was named Max Cuddles Arto Bongo Whispers.

When I went to pack, I couldn't put Max Cuddles Arto Bongo Whispers in a suitcase as he might suffocate. So we left him on the chair, safely tucked in a blanky as I proceeded to pack our bags. You can probably guess what happened next. We arrived at the airport 60 minutes prior to our departure, returned the rental car, checked in, only to realize Max Cuddles Arto Bongo Whispers was not with us.

My daughter who had traveled well up to that point, just about broke down. A companion traveling with us pointed out that worst case we would be passing the same store on the way back. Needles to say, my daughter looked at me in horror.

Thinking quickly, I called the hotel to see if the housekeeper could locate the bear. In five minutes the front desk called me back assuring me that the housekeeper had looked under the bed and in the blankets and there was no bear. I disputed this finding, explaining that we had just left, and the bear was definitely there. The woman at the front desk said she would go look and call me back. In another 5 minutes my cell rang. She had found Max Cuddles Arto Bongo Whispers. I asked her to call a cab and have the bear raced to our airline terminal. We were now about 45 minutes away from our departure time, had not yet gone through security, and the hotel was 20 minutes away.

As our flight drew nearer, our travel companion urged me and Sammy to go through security saying she would wait for the bear and if someone was going to miss a flight at least Sammy and I would travel together. Within minutes of that conversation, a large mini-van cab arrived with Max Cuddles Arto Bongo Whispers in the passenger seat. (I imagine he had fun telling people about his interesting passenger of the day!)

We raced through security (with only one stop for Orajel) and made it to our gate just as they were doing the final boarding call.

Later that day, my travel companion re-hashed the morning. She is a dear friend who has known me for many years--and also knows my weaknesses well. One of my weaknesses has always been patience. She paid me a sincere compliment on the patience I had developed during my 10 years so far as a mother. I explained that you get a special gene for that at some point during pregnancy.

As I thought back about the adventure of traveling teddy this morning, I realized why the story is so special to me, and it really doesn't have anything to do with patience or motherhood.

What happened when Max Cuddles Arto Bongo Whispers was lost, was that a 10 year old saw this as a tragedy. While you and I know, it was simply a stuffed bear that will likely end up ragged and forgotten in a toy chest within a few years, in that moment Sammy saw the event much differently.

Instead of seeing it through my 31-year-old eyes, and choosing Fed-Ex service or replacing the bear, I saw it through her eyes. And then I used the resources I had to help.

We all come to our lives with our set of experiences and they become a lens through which we see our daily activities. Living fully involves removing our "lenses" and trying on the lenses of those whom we care for. Doing this is an exercise in self-growth, in pushing our comfort zone, in seeing past the writing on the wall to a new world from a different vantage point. Then we can combine our resources with those whom we care for, stretch our thinking, stretch our vision, and truly find the magic that lies within a moment.

Your Challenge:

This week make a focused effort to see things from another person's perspective. This skill takes practice but it is one that can truly enrich your life. Each day, try to see something fresh from the eyes of another and see what gifts it will bring to you.

p.s. And of course, I am sending a thank you to the wonderful woman at the hotel who helped us. I took a photo of Sammy with Max Cuddles Arto Bongo Whispers and had her draw a picture to go with it.

For this kind woman who answered the phone also chose to see this event through the eyes of a 10-year-old.

Baby Birthday Gift Ideas

A baby’s first birthday is an exciting time for parents and family members. The baby has no idea what’s going on, just that everyone is smiling and happy and handing him new ‘stuff’ to play with. Very often, children receive toys inappropriate for their age, and will find more enjoyment from the wrapping paper and box than the new treasure.

Well meaning Aunts and Uncles feel that they must give little Johnny the best gift and head straight to the big name toy store and spend a fortune on the ‘hottest’ toy of the season only to be let down when the baby shows little interest in the new toy or worse yet, is terrified of the ‘bouncing-flipping-singing’ media frenzied creation. Here’s an idea. How about giving a unique, but time-less toy that the child can learn and grow by? Simple, well-made toys are best for babies and toddlers.

What kinds of toys are best suited for twelve month old babies? Some suggested toys are items like:

Large plastic blocks

Stacking rings

Stuffed toys of different textures

Cloth dolls

Activity centers

Music boxes and toys that make sounds

Toys to ride, push or pull

Remember, babies of this age put everything in their mouths and explore their world through their senses, so make certain that any toy you give as a gift has no small parts or small pieces that will come off. Many of the toys listed above can be used when the child enters toddler and preschool years as well, making quality and durability even more important.

A twelve month old baby is entering into the toddler stage, many are already walking by then, and love to explore with riding toys and other activities such as toy lawn mowers and wagons. A wonderful idea for a first birthday gift is a well-made, classic toy rocking horse. There are beautiful rocking horses to be found, and will become a family heirloom as other children enjoy it throughout the years.

All young toddlers love to snuggle and cuddle soft dolls and animals, and they make great first birthday gifts. Rather than buy the same doll or animal that everyone else will be bringing, look for a unique, well-crafted doll or animal that can withstand lots of love and ‘dragging around’ by the little one.

Everyone loves to give toys to kids as birthday gifts; however, not everyone knows what kind of toy is best suited for a certain age child. Giving a gift that not everyone else will think of is also a great way to make your gift stand out and be remembered. As strange as it may sound, a simple, wooden or classic toy is very often the ‘unique’ toy these days and very rarely given. TV and movie characters will come and go, but the toys that stand the test of time will be enjoyed by children for years to come. Do a little research and purchase a toy that will not only delight little Johnny, but will help him learn and grow at the same time.

Teddy Bears: A History by Samantha Forest

One of the most recognizable stuffed toys is a teddy bear. Teddy bears are considered classics, enduring, and popular for the purpose of comforting children. It is often a safe option as a gift philippines for any small child. One might wonder how these irresistibly cuddly toys came about.

Although it feels like they have been around forever, they were only conceptualized in 1902. The 26th president of the United States, Theodore 'Teddy' Roosevelt went on a hunting trip in November 14, 1902 in Mississippi while settling a border dispute between Mississippi and Louisiana. During the hunt, Roosevelt and his group chanced upon a young bear. The men in Roosevelt's group suggested that he shoot the bear but he refused, saying it is unsportsmanlike.

The incident inspired Clifford Berryman to draw a political cartoon illustrating the event. Morris Michtom was inspired by the cartoon to make a stuffed toy bear and called it teddy bear. The teddy bear craze grew such that children and even societal ladies carried their teddy bears everywhere. President Roosevelt also used the teddy bear in his re-election bid and won.

In a few years, the teddy bear craze grew even more. Many companies started manufacturing different kinds of teddy bears. It also became a popular gift philippines item. The teddy bear spread throughout the world, to Europe, Australia, and Asia.

The fondness for teddy bears dissipated at the start of World War II. However, the teddy bear came back with the declaration of British actor Peter Bull of his love for teddy bears. Later on, Beverly Port, an American dollmaker, started teddy bear artistry. The toy is not just a toy anymore that can be used as a gift philippines but has grown to be an adult collectible and antique collection. Many old, manufactured teddy bears began showing up in antique doll and toy auctions and they began winning higher and higher bids. A bear named "Teddy Girl" by Steiff sold for a record of $176,000 at Christie's auction house in 1994.

These teddy bears will still be staples in any kid's room for a long time. It's not surprising with its gift of unconditional acceptance, love, and reassurance.
