Thomas O'Brien to speak at the L.A. Mart

Thomas O'Brien
press release

L.A. Mart Design Center and the California Gift Show are proud to announce that celebrated interiors and product designer Thomas O’Brien will give this January Market’s keynote presentation on Friday, January 21, 2011.

O’Brien, who has made appearances at several L.A. Mart Design Center events, will discuss his design philosophy and his book, American Modern, a survey of seven of his most influential projects ranging from traditional to modern in style. A books signing and reception follows the presentation.
Thomas O’Brien has made a career of translating cool notions of modernism into an easy and generous array of modern styles. His traditional-to-modern design philosophy defines an eponymous brand of new-classic home furnishings, with furniture, lighting, tableware, textiles, carpets, and bedding and bath collections, for both fine and daily living. In addition, O’Brien is widely recognized for his popular Thomas O’Brien Vintage Modern collection for Target. His work has been featured in endless publications including Elle Decor, House & Garden, House Beautiful, Metropolitan Home, Town & Country, The New York Times and Architectural Digest, among others.
"We are extremely pleased that Thomas will deliver the keynote address at this year’s Market,” said Jeff Sampson, vice president marketing, L.A. Mart Design Center. “Year-round we dedicate ourselves to being the very best resource to southern California’s design community. Bringing design luminaries like O’Brien to our designers in addition to the unique, new-to-market products from our permanent showrooms and temporary gift exhibitors extends our value exponentially.”

DESIGNSTUDIO is one of those market resources. A vast array of sources for the interior designer as well as the retailer who carries home furnishings once again debuts at L.A. Mart’s 2nd Floor Exhibition Hall this January. “With floor coverings, lighting, antiques, tabletop décor, contemporary and classic furniture, as well as a varied selection of both au courant and traditional artwork, DESIGNSTUDIO will prove to be a valuable tool for designers and buyers who are searching for a new and unique selection of merchandise for the home,” said Frank Joens, Vice President, Sales, California Gift Show.

Saturday Special: Tradeshow Exhibitors & Social Media

Trade shows and social media are made for each other.

Shows consist of you, your product and your customers. Social media allow you to share this information.

It's important to document the event. Besides your booth, the one key piece of equipment to take is a digital camera with video and voice recording capabilities. I've covered hundreds of trade shows from the media side. My digital camera has become as indispensable as pen and paper.

With this camera, you are creating the raw material for your social media and traditional  marketing efforts. You will use the photos, videos and sounds you record for:

With this camera, you are creating the raw material for your social media and traditional  marketing efforts. You will use the photos, videos and sounds you record for:
  1. Facebook
  2. Your website
  3. Your blog
  4. Twitter
  5. Flickr (or other photo-sharing site)
  6. YouTube account
  7. Press releases
  8. Internal sales presentations
  9. E-mail newsletters
  10. Brochures
  11. Advertising
What should you shoot? You have to think like a newsman. Ask yourself: What interests my customers? What do I want my sales staff to know about my products? What story do I want to tell the media?
Assign someone on your staff to be the official photographer. Create a list of shots you must have. This might include: booth set up; products; ribbon cutting; award presentations (to customers or to staff); and customer interaction.
Think about what each of the social medium needs; that is, photos for Flickr and press releases; video for blog and website.

If you plan ahead, you will return from the trade show with six-months worth of material. The next step is to share that information.

Feeling overwhelmed? I'm available to help tell your story. Give me a call.

Fair Trade Federation Offerings Expanded at California Gift Show

from a press release

Los Angeles, CA (December 3, 2009)—This January, the California Gift Show and the Fair Trade Federation are joining forces again to offer the largest Fair Trade Pavilion in the industry, January 15-18, 2010. This unique pavilion demonstrates the importance of Fair Trade products in the gift industry. This large selection of products promotes equitable and sustainable trading partnerships and creates opportunities to alleviate poverty. Located at the heart of Kentia Hall’s World Style Collection at the Los Angeles Convention Center, the Fair Trade Federation Pavilion will offer products from nearly 20 Fair Trade members alongside an extensive collection of ethnographic art, international handicrafts, textiles, home decor, furnishings and fashion apparel and accessories.
The California Gift Show is known for providing a global marketplace and long supporting Fair Trade Organizations, emphasized through its creation of the first designated Fair Trade Federation Pavilion in the Gift Industry. “Within Fair Trade, there are specific criteria which make an organization or a product Fair Trade,” said Carmen K. Iezzi, executive director of the Fair Trade Federation.
“Federation members undergo a rigorous and thorough evaluation process to demonstrate their work in nine Principles, so buyers know that they have Fair Trade at the heart of what they do.” Carmen K. Iezzi will be present at the California Gift Show to give an introduction to Fair Trade and the Federation. Fair Trade offerings will bring a strong sense of community and social consciousness to market. Buyers that shop the Fair Trade exhibitors in the special section have a keen interest in developing a profitable business by supporting global community enterprise. “
As consumers embrace social responsibility and global awareness, it is vital for retailers to include ethically produced merchandise in their stores,” said Pam Williams, divisional manager, World Style at California Gift Show. ”The Fair Trade Federation pavilion provides a place for retailers to find these unique Fair Trade products consumers are requesting.” Fair trade is a system of exchange that seeks to create greater equity and partnership in international trading. Fair Trade is about bringing great products, from clothing, coffee, food, furniture, home décor, and house wares, to jewelry, tea, toys, and personal accessories to the public. It strives to keep prices affordable for consumers while fairly compensating producers. And finally, Fair Trade creates huge impacts on communities. The system helps to pay children’s school fees and health cares costs, meet nutritional needs, empower women and the less fortunate, and alleviate environmental impact.
