Review: Dakota Watch Company Angler II

When you are fishing there are a few items on your person that you don't want to get wet - like your cell phone, GPS unit and certainly your watch.

How many of us have reached in to grab a fish only to cringle as we realize we've just stuck our non-waterproof watch into the water? Right? So the first thing you need a waterproof watch on a waterproof watch band. But maybe your wrist isn't the best place for a watch anyway. How about clipping your watch somewhere higher up then the top of your waders?

That's just one of the many features of the Dakota Angler II watch. It doesn't go on your wrist it clips on where you want it. This watch really is the swiss army knife of watches. Just look at some of the other fisherman inspired features. It includes an integrated hook sharpener to keep your fly hooks sharp, it has an attached set of handy stainless steel nippers.

Its water resistant to 100 feet which is required in any fishing watch. It has an alarm, stopwatch and date with lighted digital display. A cool integrated Celcius / Fahrenheit Thermometer - handy for taking water temperatures and get this -- a built in compass. Hey you never know. The batteries on your GPS might die and it can be awfully expensive to call for help.

So is that it? Actually there is one more killer feature for helping you find your way back to the car after dusk - a built in ultra bright L.E.D microlight.

They thought of everything except a pair of pliers with this baby!

Fishing Watches Make Great Fishing Gifts

Shopping for your fishing fanatic brother? Fishing Dad for Father's Day or maybe your fishing nut son-in-law? Nothing makes a better gifts than a new watch designed with fishing in mind.

There are quite a few great fishing watches on the market as manufacturer's wake up to the fact that angler's want and need quality timepieces with their sport in mind. Some things to consider when shopping for the perfect watch:

1. Waterproofing or water resistance - This is the most important feature a fishing watch can provide since "duh" the angler will be around, on and in water while pursuing their sport.

2. Features - after water resistance features such as hook sharpeners, alarms, depth gauges and even electronic fish finders are important considerations. The alarms I'm going to describe in this article have an amazing array of features aimed at anglers. Of course the more features usually the larger the watch and the price. Pick only the features you need if you are on a budget.

3. Style - Function or style? The following fishing watches range from purely functional for when the fisherman is right in the action, to more stylish watches to wear perhaps to the fishing club meetings or out to dinner. The Dakota Silver Angler fits the bill here. A stylish watch with water resistant features but not a lot else except for great looks.

4. Price - For only the lucky few, price is not object. For the rest of us we want to get the most for our money. Fortunely most of these feature rich fishing watches can be had for less then $100. Some for even less than $50.

Dakota Watch Company

The Dakota Watch Company has been in the watch business since 1945. They sell an impressive line of watches packed with features for anglers. Their line includes the classic Angler with black rubber band, the fancier Silver Angler and the mindblowing multifunctional Angler II, and the Angler III reviewed below.

Dakota Silver Angler Watch

The best selling line of fishing watches, "Angler" features a classic look for fishermen. The Silver Angler is the newest member of the Angler Family boast an oversized sleek new 39mm Solid Stainless Steel Case. As with the other members of the Angler Family of wristwatches, the series feature a Moonglow Dial and a Water Resistant Band.

Dakota Watch Company ANGLER III

Not too often you see a product review on something other then items directly used to put a fly in front of the fish but this one has got to be seen. I recently had the pleasure of receiving what has to be the coolest tool for flyfishermen I have seen in a long time. From the Dakota Watch Company, who are renowned back east for making amazing time pieces, comes the ANGLER III.

When I received the watch, or should I say flyfishing tool with a nice watch neatly tucked into it, I was very impressed. Lightweight and handsome to boot. I was surprised at the amount of helpful tools that could be included in this compact package. Below is a list taken direct from the company;

• Integrated Hook Sharpener
• Attached Stainless Steel Nippers
• Integrated Retrac Mechanism
• 100 Feet Water Resistant
• Powerful LED Microlight
• "Cuff Clip" with "Audible Security Click"
• Black Moonlglow Electro Luminescent Dial
• Plastic and Aluminum Construction
• Silver Accents on Black Case
• Calendar Display
• Integrated Superior Compass
• Oversized EZ Touch Buttons
• Luminescent Hands and Hour Markers

Like I said, it has it all. The clip is like those ones you use for rock climbing and is very secure. I would not worry one bit about this one coming off as it is very well made. There is a great zinger that has what feels like the perfect tension and retracts faithfully even after a thousand pulls. Add to this zinger the great pair of nippers that come with the package and you have a winner. There is also a compass tucked in there that is exact in it's directions. I for one need this as I tend to get myself lost in the Uintas, ALL THE TIME!!! The Watch is small enough to not be obtrusive but large enough to view with a quick glance. Has a very nice moonglow function for use at night. Also in there is a very handy LED light for those night fishing escapades. On the side is the hook sharpener which I did not get to utilize as of yet but can say it is very strategic and out of the way. You would not even know it exists until you go looking for it.

I just have to say, this is one that I can say will help each one of us to stay organized and safe. It will assist in the area it is designed for perfectly and hey, it is another piece of gear!! You know we like gear. The watch of course is waterproof and I don't think anyone is capable of getting this one to leak, especially not at the depths we utilize it in, and that is good because I tend to "swim" frequently on my outings. This watch alone is a great deal at the MSRP of $65.00 but it even comes with a great fly box. The box is completely waterproof and floats so it could also be used to keep those valuables safe and dry on the trips. Deep enough to fit a camera or your wallet and keys. On Sale Here

Royal Message Relay

Have all your guests sit in a circle. Have your birthday child think of a silly royal phrase or sentence. It might be a funny message for the king and queen... Your birthday child whispers the message to the guest on their right. That child whispers the message to the person on their right until the message travels all the way around the circle to the person sitting just to the left of your birthday child. For the Nude Hiker on your list

Or maybe just a hiking friend who has a good sense of humor. Give 'em this great t-shirt from Fishboy and encourage them to cover up. The long sleeves provide protection from the sun while leaving the below the belt area to be optional.

Nude Hiking Etiquette & Tips by Murray Lundberg

Given the fact that most people hike with clothes on even when there's no physical need for them, a few precautions willallow those of us who prefer to walk in comfort to do so without causing any problems. From the excellent Australian starting point posted at geocities.com/barebushwalking/Hints.html, I've modified it to:

1. Avoid trails where there are likely to be clothed hikers. It's best to avoid confrontation if at all possible.

2. Use 'out and back' trails. That way if there are no vehicles at the trailhead you can be pretty sure that at least on the outward journey you will have the trail to yourself.

3. Look for signs that others have been on the trail before you, and if you do meet someone coming the other way, ask them if they have seen anyone else on the trail.

4. Avoid trails where there are likely to be children and family groups. People who would normally react with a smile when meeting a nude hiker can easily take offence if they feel their children are threatened.

5. If possible, hike with others. A lone hiker is more likely to be seen in a bad light than a group. A group with both men and women will also generally be seen in a better light than an all-male one.

6. If possible do your walks on a weekday rather than on weekends.
Relaxing by the lake in the buff on a nude hike.

7. Be aware of where the trail will take you - you don't want to find yourself in a residential area.

8. Keep an eye out ahead for approaching hikers, and be prepared to cover up quickly. If you are alert you will see or hear them long before they are aware of you.

9. If you are caught by surprise, act naturally, normally and openly. Don't dive into the bushes or act in some other guilty or suspicious manner.

10. Take off sunglasses to greet or talk to others.

11. Be aware of weather conditions. Take clothing that would be required if it started raining or there was a sudden drop in temperature.

12. Put your clothes back on if you have to traverse areas where it is likely you may slip and find yourself sliding down rough or rocky ground. Nude gravel rash is best avoided.

13. Carry sufficient food and fluids for the duration of your walk, and be aware that hiking in the nude makes dehydration occur more quickly.

14. Carry plenty of sunscreen and mosquito repellant.

15. Last but definitely not least, tell someone where you're going and when you'll be back.

Kids Birthday Party Ideas

Theme parties are always great fun for any child's birthday party.

Does your child have a favorite movie, book, TV show, favorite character, or maybe your child likes animals or has a favorite sport or past time. Well how about using one of your child's favorites as the theme for their birthday party.

Planning Your Party

If your child is old enough, sit down with them and ask what kind of theme they'd like for their party. Then, keeping your budget in mind, as well as space limitations and preparation time, choose a theme and start making plans.

Once you've decided on a theme for your child's birthday party, you'll find that everything begins to fall right in place.

Kid Birthday Party Invitations

You and your child will have lots of fun putting together a creative invitation for their party.

When wording your invitation, try getting into your theme and have some fun. Use words and phrases that fit your theme.

If you're having a Princess birthday party, you might make it a "Royal Invitation from the King and Queen."

For a Pirate birthday party, write your invitation on a piece of brown paper bag crumpled up to look like old parchment. Draw a map to your house and have "X" mark the spot. Then write something like this, "Aaarrrhh, we be celebratin the birthday of Captain (your child's first and last name) and ye be invited."

Interactive invitations are lots of fun and help to get your invited guests involved in your theme right away.

For a Dinosaur birthday party you can send along a small box with a small plastic dinosaur "buried" in glacial ice (wrapped in cotton). Then the recipient can "dig up" the dinosaur.

For a Princess birthday party you could have your invitation rolled up, tied with a purple ribbon and hand delivered by someone in appropriate costume.

Be creative and have fun with your invitation. Remember, it's the first impression your guests will have of your up-coming party. Get them excited so they can hardly wait!

Kid Birthday Party Decorating Ideas

With your theme in mind, you can keep your decorations simple by using balloons and streamers and by putting pictures on your walls that you've cut from magazines.

Or you can be a little more creative by turning your living room into your theme location.

For a Dinosaur birthday party put blue and white helium filled balloons on your ceiling to form a sky with clouds. Then hang dark brown, light brown, green and orange streamers from the ceiling to the floor to make a jungle. Wrap some of the streamers together to make your jungle thicker.

For a Princess birthday party create a special throne using a chair and decorating it with bright red and purple balloons and streamers. And maybe even use a colorful pillow.

Again, be creative and have fun.

Kid Birthday Party Game Ideas

Most party games can be slightly modified to fit your theme. For a Blue's Clues birthday party Pin the Tail on the Donkey can become "pin the tail on Blue."

For a Princess party, Musical Chairs becomes "The Royal Musical Ball" and you can play appropriate music.

And speaking of music, music that is appropriate to your theme is perfect to use during your games. Simply start a game when your music starts. You can easily find CDs for most movies and TV shows.

Kid Birthday Cakes

There are a lot of great recipes available for theme birthday cakes, or you can easily pick up a frosted cake then add "edible cake toppers" for your theme.

For an Incredibles birthday party, label your food. Ketchup becomes "super sauce", carrot sticks become "energy sticks" and you can even have a mini "hero sandwich."

If you're using an underwater theme like Finding Nemo, serve "peanut butter & jellyfish" sandwiches, Gold Fish crackers and "tuna fish" sandwiches.

Be Creative

Even with a limited budget you can be creative and come up with lots of fun kid birthday party ideas... Put just a little effort into your plans and your child will fondly remember this birthday party for years to come.

And don't forget to take lots of pictures and shoot lots of video of everyone having fun.

  • Continue to fold 4" lengths back and forth until you have six layers of 4" loops.
  • Cut ends the same length as the first three tails of crepe. Tie a piece of curling ribbon tightly around all layers of crepe 3 1/4" from top of loops, catching the bottoms of all 4" lengths.
  • Separate loops by placing your forefinger inside at the top of each loop, use your thumb and second finger to pinch loop at the bottom and give it a 1/4 twist. Twisting will keep each loop from sliding back into the one next to it.
  • Continue separating each group of loops, alternating the colors.
  • Insert two or three fingers inside each loop and spread apart all the way down to the base to fluff and smooth each loop.
  • Pin rosettes to the corner of your table cloth, on your curtains or place in the middle of a balloon cluster. Drape one or two of the tails around balloons and let the rest hang below rosette.

Birthday Chocolate Caramel Cheesecake Recipe

"This is an extremely rich chocolate cheesecake with a distinct caramel flavor (not a layer of caramel). Eat more than a sliver only at your own risk."

INGREDIENTS

  • 2 cups graham cracker crumbs
  • 1/2 cup cocoa powder
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 3/4 cup melted butter
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 3/4 cup water
  • 1 1/2 cups heavy cream
  • 8 ounces bittersweet chocolate, coarsely chopped
  • 3/4 cup sour cream
  • 3 (8 ounce) packages cream cheese
  • 4 eggs
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract

DIRECTIONS

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Lightly coat a 10-inch springform pan with nonstick cooking spray.

2. Combine the graham cracker crumbs with the cocoa powder and 1 cup sugar. Toss with melted butter. Press into the bottom and 1 to 2-inches up the sides of the prepared springform pan.

3. Bring 2 cups sugar and the water to a boil in a large, heavy-bottomed pot. Reduce heat to medium-low, and continue to cook without stirring until the mixture has turned a deep, golden color, 30 to 45 minutes. Remove from the heat, and carefully pour in the heavy cream (the mixture will bubble vigorously). Return the caramel to the stove over low heat, and stir until completely liquefied. Stir in the chocolate until melted, then stir in the sour cream. Remove from heat and set aside.

4. Beat the cream cheese until fluffy in an electric mixer. Add caramel mixture, and blend well, scraping the sides of the bowl occasionally. Add eggs, one at a time, scraping the bowl after each addition. Add the vanilla with the last egg. Mix until well incorporated, then pour mixture into prepared pan.

5. Place pan into a hot water bath with the water coming half way up the sides of the springform pan. Bake in the center of the preheated oven until the center has set, about 1 hour 15 minutes. The cheesecake is done when the middle 3 or 4 inches are still a little wobbly. Chill completely before serving.
